Class Meetings & Partnering with Parents and Community
This week's PLT staff discussion was lead by Judy McClendon:
General Questions and Comments from West Campus PLC Members:
- Emeli Sande has a great music video about hurtful words.
- A concern over having a modified schedule every Wednesday next semester was expressed.
- National anti-bullying campaigns are becoming more prevalent (including video contests, etc.).
- Some teachers expressed appreciation for the availability of scripted plans for class meetings.
- Some teachers expressed appreciation for the freedom to plan their own class meetings.
- Will 20 minutes be enough time for an effective class meeting?
- How would we implement a 45-minute plan in only 20 minutes?
- We might consider meeting once a month for a longer period of time.
- What is the date of the kick-off, and what will it entail?
- How soon will we get plans for the first class meeting?
- We should ask seniors to share topics they wish we would have covered earlier in their h.s.career.
- We could have upper-class students facilitate meetings for younger students.
- We should find out what topics were covered in the middle schools so we can plan efficiently.
- In future years, will we cover the same material? Redundant?
- The movie Contest deals with bullying in an engaging way.
- Invite community members to speak with our students.
- Job expectations
- Relationships
- Losing a job because of “bullying,” harassment, behavior, etc.
- RCPD could talk about harassment and bullying and the consequences when people are over 18.
- Parents could come into our 4th hour classes and help lead or participate in discussions.
- We could plan and promote an event outside of school and invite everyone (maybe a “town fair”?).
- We could get donations and gifts from local businesses (“rewards” for specific behavior, etc.).
- We could ask businesses to mention our efforts in their advertising.
- Notify the media (KMAN, KSNT, The Mercury, etc.) about our kick-off and our ongoing efforts.
- Invite the parents to the kick-off.
- We can share information about our efforts through IC Messenger, texts, etc.
- Flyers could be handed out at school events and/or in the community.
- We could put concepts and ideas on our district’s tv channel and website.
- Contact Chamber of Commerce.
- Our guest speaker could have an assembly for parents.
- We could share information about our efforts at parent conferences.
