We spent some time discussing how the teachers felt the staff training went on August 12th. Some comments consisted along the lines of:
- Thought the training was positive, liked that the program is proactive in addressing bullying and consistent student expectations
- Talked about the confusion over calling someone a bully versus identifying it as bullying behavior
- Is it possible to create homerooms? It would be nice to keep the same kids for class meetings for 3-years and if not that, then 1-year… need to work on the classes that switch at semester.
- Do not like that another staff member who has plan or PLT 4th hour comes in to facilitate a tribe time without having relationships built with the students. We need to keep track of data (office referrals, academic performance, etc.) in order to possibly gain district support/financing once the grant money expires.
- Announce students doing good things without using their names but announce that the students will be notified and rewarded. Need a place to post all the good deeds that teachers have noticed. Create a binder (like at AMS and EMS) that has activities teachers could do in tribe time but still have flexibility… assign a set number of expected topics to be covered per quarter but give teachers the freedom to pick a certain activity and time to do it.
- Some liked the role playing at training whereas others did not.. Discussed how it would be done in a class meeting and the importance of only having students who are comfortable role-playing be asked to do so.
- Did not like role playing and thought it would be better to have a scenario written out and then have teachers practice intervening. Thought the morning was good but that the afternoon dragged… could have condensed what she said and presented it differently.
